The exclusive eyeKnow™ Web-based application is specifically designed to assist Emergency Medical Service organizations in tracking controlled substances during their life cycle, and at the show hundreds of interested attendees saw demonstrations of the product firsthand and learned comprehensive details about its features. eyeKnow™ allows EMS organizations to track controlled drugs deployed on all EMS vehicles through an effective, time efficient software tool that has never been available until now.
Responding to the nationwide problem that EMS organizations spend an increasing amount of time managing and auditing the controlled drugs deployed with every paramedic unit, Protelligent experts worked with an active fire department captain to develop a more competent auditing process.
Christopher George, Protelligent President and CEO, and Christopher Hoven, Protelligent CIO, worked with the fire captain using his extensive knowledge of controlled substances and the current tracking procedures within EMS organizations to create a technical solution to the problem. The Protelligent team developed a Web-based application to automate the management of the controlled drugs utilized by paramedics: the eyeKnow™ Inventory Tracking System.
"At EMS organizations throughout the country controlled drugs go missing and remain unaccounted for," said Mr. George. "Many units are in service with less than their full complement of drugs. Others are carrying around expired and/or soon to expire drugs. There's also the risk of litigation due to the possibility of tampering and misuse.
Now through the use of the eyeKnow™ Inventory Tracking System, coupled with internal policy and procedures on the procurement, distribution, usage and reporting of controlled substances, these departments can significantly increase accountability, security and manageability of all controlled drugs while reducing the risks associated with lawsuits and litigation due to inadequate auditing procedures."
The eyeKnow™ system works through a three-step process. First, the drugs are distributed into clear tamper-evident bags permanently marked with unique bar-code stickers. The drugs are then scanned or manually logged into the eyeKnow™ tracking system. Second, designated paramedics perform daily auditing using the eyeKnow™ barcode scanner, which is linked to a station computer and uploads the captured data to the eyeKnow™ tracking system.
Last, once the audit is finished, all authorized personnel can see the real-time status of the drugs and email alerts are sent to managing staff members. One of the most important benefits of this system is that the entire process takes approximately 60 seconds out of a paramedic's day, and does not require the burden of lengthy, time-consuming paperwork.
Additionally, the eyeKnow™ Inventory Tracking System's reporting can be customized to support new and enhanced auditing procedures used at any EMS organization throughout the country. It can also be used to track other inventoried items such as non-controlled drugs, AED devices, emergency and station equipment, supplies and more.
